What Is The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution & What Does It Do?
Salicylic Acid is a water-based product listed under Direct Acids on The Ordinary website. It´s a BHA which stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid and is great for pores, congested and blemished skin because BHAs penetrate deeper into the skin. You can use this all over your face or just as a spot treatment.
Targets: Dullness, textural irregularties, skin clarity.
Deciem´s Simple Explanation. 🧪 Salicylic Acid 2% Solution incorporates a beta hydroxy acid renowned for its ability to soften and chemically exfoliate the skin. It targets dullness, texture irregularities and aims to promote visible skin clarity. Due to the potency of Salicylic Acid, this formula is not recommended for those with sensitive, compromised or peeling skin. For those of you with an affection for Salicylic Acid that may be interested in a lower concentration, we’re happy to share that formulas of 0.5% and 1% strength are soon to be added to the collection.
How & When Do I Use The Ordinary Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic Acid is a water-based product, so if you have read the How To Layer The Ordinary page, you will know that water-based products are applied to the skin first. You can use this all over your face or as a spot treatment. Start with dry, cleansed skin and apply a few drops all over your face or to specific areas. It is highly recommended to do a patch test before using this product.
Salicylic Acid Burns
Unfortunately, you can have a bad reaction from any skincare product which is why patch tests are recommended. There have been a handful of posts in the Facebook Group about burns from the Salicylic Acid which could really put you off trying this product, however as you can see from the polls, many love and use this product with no problems at all. There will be people who are allergic to this product and experience bad reactions, but sadly we cannot be entirely sure which other products were used alongside or if anything else may have occurred during or around the time of applying. Please, read the official Salicylic Acid page, do a patch test and be sure you understand which products conflict including products you may be using from other brands.
Which Products Conflict With The Ordinary Salicylic Acid.
As this is an acid and there are quite a few conflicts and warnings so do read up on this before using. You may find you can only use this once a day if you’re using other products that conflict.

This is Deciem´s response about mixing Acids and Peptides.
Our rule against combining strong antioxidants only applies to our products containing copper peptides. We would not recommend combining direct acids with peptides due to the susceptibility of peptides to hydrolysis (which breaks the bonds between peptides, reducing their efficacy and making them into individual amino acids). At low pH, the peptides undergo processes such as deamidation (the removal of an amide group) and oxidation, which compromise the activity of the peptides.
Having said that, if you have previously combined peptides with acids and have not experienced any negative side effects or discoloration, you may continue to combine the two products as so as the combination does not pose any potential harm. Our recommendations are meant to serve as a preventative measure to avoid any incompatibility between those combinations and also because skin tolerance is subjective.
Can I use Salicylic Acid in the summer months? Deciem´s reply: Yes you can use this all year round.
This product seems to go a bit soapy when I apply. This is quite a common problem, it can happen with Niacinamide too. Try using less product and also make sure you have completely rinsed off your cleanser so there’s no residue.
Can I use Salicylic Acid with Niacinamide. Yes, they´re fine to use together. They are used together in this regimen for look of blemishes and congestion.
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Reviews
Let’s hear what some of the moderators of the Deciem Chat Room have to say about the Salicylic Acid. Please remember that mods are totally independent.
Rachael Candice A slightly tacky formula which makes for a strange base to layer over. However, as a spot treatment of breakouts, it can reduce inflammation drastically overnight.
Tracy: Burned my skin…not a glowing review sorry.
Nia Patten It has a sticky soapy texture that I found tolerable, and it didn’t burn or irritate. I found it made my acne worse, I’m afraid. I would proceed with caution with this one
meggieslashes. The salicylic acid hands down is THE BEST! I use it all over my face after the glycolic toner in the evening and my skin is blemish-free and smooth in texture. I have struggled with adult acne on my chin and parts of my cheeks. Since I have been using Salicylic Acid, I am blemish-free! Please ladies give this a try! ❤️❤️🤗
carolinagsietra Game changer! I apply it on my spots as a local treatment and they are gone the day after
thebeautywonk. 5/5 I love this!! Will absolutely repurchase it ❤️ It dramatically reduces the acne size within just 2 days (documented it in one of my insta posts too) and works excellent for blackheads. If u got oily, acne-prone skin, GET IT!
