What is The Ordinary Niacinamide and what does it do?
Deciem´s simple explanation: Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, is a high-strength vitamin and mineral formula that helps to support barrier function while reducing the appearance of visible shine and signs of congestion.
This ingredient has also been shown to have a brightening effect on the skin, making it a truly multifunctional ingredient that can be easily incorporated into any routine. We have included Niacinamide at a high 10% concentration within this formula. Additionally, this formula includes a 1% concentration of Zinc PCA, which works to support the skin’s function as a protective barrier.
- Brightens skin
- Regulates Sebum
- Minimizes Pores
- Signs of congestion
- Support the skin’s function as a protective barrier
How and when do I use Niacinamide?
- You can use Niacinamide in the morning and evening.
- Avoid the eye area when applying. This isn´t mentioned on the Deciem regimen guide but Deciem said this to a customer on social media. See faqs below.
- Niacinamide is a water-based product and would be applied as one of your first layers, before anhydrous, oils, and creams.
- You can read all about layering The Ordinary here.
Natural Moisturising Factors
Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
Rose Hip Seed Oil
Borage Seed Oil
Some Examples of where Niacinamide will fit into your routine. Find these personalised The Ordinary routines here.
Which products can and cannot be used with Niacinamide?
Deciem does not recommend applying Niacinamide in the same routine as pure Vitamin C as Niacinamide has the capacity to affect the integrity of Vitamin C, potentially reducing its efficacy.
PURE VITAMIN C (conflicts) – Do not use with Niacinamide
- Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone
- Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%
- Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%
- Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution
- 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder
VITAMIN C DERIVATIVES (No Conflicts except Niacinamide Powder)
- Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F
- Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%
How to patch test The Ordinary Niacinamide
There is a whole guide on the Deciem website about how to patch test the products.
- Apply a small amount of the product onto a clean area of skin on the upper forearm.
- Keep the area dry.
- After 24 hours rinse the area.
- If any redness, burning, itching, blistering or irritation is observed at any time throughout the test, do not use the product.
Please be aware that it is still possible to have a reaction when you apply Niacinamide to your face. Therefore, it would be a good idea to spot test this on your face before applying it all over even if your patch test was ok.

I’ve been using The Ordinary’s Niacinamide for 2 yrs now. My skin loves it. I have oily skin prone to breakouts and this makes my skin look amazing.
Niacinamide has tightened my pores and helped with blemishes.
These faqs have been asked and answered by Deciem on social media.
Can I use Niacinamide around the eyes? Niacinamide is not formulated for the eye area.
Is it ok to use The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% on top of Niacinamide? You may apply Lactic Acid before Niacinamide.
Can this be used with AHA/BHA products at the same time? After rinsing off the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, you may apply Niacinamide.
Is it possible to still breakout with the 10%? Purging is possible with any products that effect the skins behaviour.
Can I use The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide and Retinol in the same routine? Yes you may! Generally, we recommend applying water-based solutions first, followed by anhydrous or oil formulations, and finally cream/suspension formulas.
What would come first? The Ordinary Niacinamide or Mandelic Acid? You may apply The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA first.
Can I use Niacinamide + Alpha Arbutin + Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution + AHA and BHA peeling solution in the same routine? Which ones are essential for blemishes and dark spots? Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin are great products to target your concerns. You may use your products in the same routine. However, we do not suggest the use of both AHA + BHA Peeling Solution and Glycolic Acid in the same routine.
Which Deciem products would you recommend for oily and acne-prone skin? We suggest the use of The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. As this is a high-strength vitamin and mineral formula that visibly targets the look of blemishes and signs of congestion. We recommend avoiding unprotected solar exposure, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time, and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin. Just as a note – none of our products can be considered medical treatments for acne, so we suggest consulting with your physician to see what may work best for your skin.
I have The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide and Buffet+Copper. What order should I apply these? Buffet + Copper Peptides > Hyaluronic Acid > Niacinamide.
Can we use The Ordinary Niacinamide with Alpha Arbutin. Yes, you may! We suggest using the Alpha Arbutin first.
Is The Ordinary Niacinamide ok for sensitive skin? This solution is suitable for all skin types. Apply patch tests prior to a full face application.
Would I apply The Ordinary Niacinamide before or after The Ordinary Buffet. You may wish to apply The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% after The Ordinary “Buffet”.
Can I use The Ordinary Niacinamide after the Glycolic Acid 7% toning solution and before Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%? I’ve been ending my regimen with the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA. Yes, you may!
Is it possible for Niacinamide to lighten pigmentation from acne scars? Niacinamide has some brightening properties which may help with hyperpigmentation.
Is there anything we should avoid layering this with? Please note that Niacinamide cannot be used alongside L-Ascorbic Acid and Ethylated Ascorbic Acid as Niacinamide can affect the integrity of these forms of Vitamin C.
Would I use the Niacinamide serum before 100% organic cold-pressed rosehip seed oil? You can apply The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% first then The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil with no conflicts!
Is this the best vitamin B product you have to complement a skincare routine with vitamin A and C use? I’m using Retin-A and a vitamin C serum. It is difficult for us to comment on the pairing of our products with those of other brands and/or prescription medications. We recommend consulting with your doctor/dermatologist, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time, and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin. Niacinamide should not be used with pure forms of Vitamin C.
Can Niacinamide be combined with Vitamin C in the morning and glycolic acid or retinoids in the evening? Niacinamide is safe to use alongside Glycolic Acid and/or Retinoids but it should only be used with Vitamin C derivatives.
Can I use The Ordinary Mandelic Acid with Niacinamide? Niacinamide may be used with Mandelic Acid
