My Personal Review of The Ordinary UV Filters 45 Serum
I have been using the new SPF for a couple of weeks now and I am a fan for 2 main reasons; It doesn´t irritate my eyes and it doesn´t leave me looking ill because there is no white cast. The UV Filters 45 goes on beautifully and leaves my skin looking and feeling super hydrated and it has definitely protected my skin. It layers really well with my other skincare and doesn´t pill.
It is shiny when you apply it, but that does calm down after a few minutes. I don’t mind the finish, but I can see why some people may not like it. You might want to add a bit of powder if you prefer a more matte look with makeup. It keeps my skin hydrated and—importantly—has no white cast, which is a big deal for my olive, melasma-prone skin.
I’ve tried numerous sunscreens before, and they often make me look unwell, pill on my skin, or, worst of all, irritate my eyes. When I say irritation, I’m not talking about just a little discomfort—it’s so severe at times that I can’t see. I’ve had to buy cleansers on the go to wash everything off and go makeup-free, and I’ve missed group photos at weddings all because of SPF. Even when I’m careful not to touch my eyes and wash my hands thoroughly, it still happens, especially in the sun or wind.
Daughter – Acne prone skin
My daugher has also been using this SPF and loves how hydrating it is and that it doesn´t sting her eyes. She´s spent a few sunny days at the beach and her skin was well protected. When she wears make up she does need to apply some powder. She´s also used it a couple of times adding tanning drops (Elf I think) and she loves the fact that she looks like she has a glow with her skin protected.
Husband – Cyclist & Runner
He has been using this and for short runs and bike rides, he said it´s really comfortable on the skin. Doesn´t leave any white bits in his beard and he hasn´t had any irritation.
Final thoughts on the new SPF by The Ordinary
There may be better or cheaper SPFs out there, but for someone like me who just wants reliable protection without eye irritation or looking ill, I’m sticking with this one. I also tend to get overwhelmed by too much choice. I’ve been loyal to The Ordinary and NIOD since 2017 after realising that fragrance was causing my allergic reactions, so I don’t plan on switching now that I’ve found something that truly works for me.
If eye irritation is one of the main problems you face with SPFs, please pop into a store near you (if possible) and give this a try. I can only speak from my personal experience and I really hope it works for you the way it works for me.
Once again, I must reiterate that this is my personal opinion and I have seen other people online saying it made them cry and they didn´t like the finish of it on their skin. Therefore, if you have a store near you that sells The Ordinary SPF, I would pop in and give it a try and then walk around for a while before buying it. Alternatively, if you buy it and if it doesn´t work for you on your face, just use it up on your chest/body. I would also avoid the eyes and thoroughly wash your hands afterwards.
The Ordinary SPF 45 – New SPF is here!

Housed in a sleek white bottle with a pump, this new SPF serum is a joy to use. From the small amount I tested, I can already say it’s impressive: no white cast, and best of all, zero irritation, even around my sensitive eye area. My skin felt comfortable and looked dewy and felt hydrated, and I genuinely wish I had more of it to keep using. Obviously, everyone´s skin is different, and whilst this works for me, it may not work for you.
There is some bad news. Some countries will not be getting this new SPF due to regulations. These countries include; Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, South Korea & Japan.

More FAQs
Q. Is this mineral or chemical
A: The Ordinary say they have stepped away from Minderal Filters this time and instead, they have worked with a blend of FDA-approved chemical filters to formulate an affordable, lightweight, high-SPF sunscreen that feels comfortable on the skin and does not leave a white cast. This is suitable for daily use.
Q. What skin types is this for?
A: The Ordinary says that this is suitable for all skin types and that includes sensitive skin.
Q. Why SPF 45 and not 50?
A: The Ordinary says, “Contrary to popular belief, the UV filter number is not decided by the brand that formulates the sun-protectant but rather by the formula itself. SPF is a value that is calculated by considering the time it takes for skin to turn red when exposed to UV light — with sunscreen, versus without sunscreen. When The Ordinary’s product underwent testing, the SPF value that it achieved was SPF 45 — which is estimated to absorb only 0.2% less UVB radiation than SPF 50. It was also found to achieve broad spectrum protection — a level of defense across
both UVA and UVB rays. Although both UVA and UVB rays affect aging and can cause burning, they hold different weights and roles when it comes to UV exposure”.
Instagram Polls
As always, it is important to read all reviews, the good, the bad and the just ok.
On Instagram, I asked the followers who said they didn´t like the new SPF, for their reasons. It´s important to note that the majority of people who said they “didn´t like it/it´s not for them“, didn´t try the SPF but haven´t tried it based on ingredients and information.
Every single one of us is different. This doesn´t pill or roll up on my skin and it doesn´t sting my eyes. I can´t only tell you my personal experience which is why, I say, if you have a store near you, to give it a try for yourself. Apply it, walk around for a while and then decide if it´s for you.
